The ski helmet construction generally consists of the outer shell and the lining. Lining types and components are discussed below in the safety section as they are widely considered some of the biggest safety factors in a ski helmet. Construction for the outer shell is absolutely a contributor to safety and impact protection. Hardshell construction is the standard in the industry and comes in many flavors. New materials are constantly being developed and launching in the market. Some brands like Sweet Protection are even using carbon fiber for innovative lightweight helmets.
Ventilation
Temperature regulation in helmets can be tricky. Balancing protection with comfort can come at a cost. If you plan to prioritize downhill skiing, great ventilation may not be such a high priority, but if you'll be skinning up the slopes as well, this is something you'll want to pay attention to.
Many helmets come equipped with adjustable vents that can be opened or closed depending on weather and activity. Helmets with Koroyd have the added benefit of requiring fewer vents to be cut through the shell and lining, as the tubular structure allows air to move freely through the entire surface of the core.
Safety
The big name in helmet safety tech is MIPS. Found in ski helmets, bicycle helmets, and even motorcycle helmets, MIPS (short for Multi-directional Impact Protection System) is designed to reduce rotational impact during crashes at high speeds. A low-friction layer separates the shell and liner of the helmet, allowing a sliding movement between the layers, which mimics the brain's natural protective structure. Koroyd is an exciting recent addition to ski helmet linings. Composed of thousands of co-polymer tubes thermo welded into a honeycomb structure, it offers a light, breathable alternative to EPS foam. This does mean that a helmet needs to be replaced after impact as the material does not bounce back to its original shape. Koroyd does not stiffen or soften with temperature fluctuations between -20 degrees C to 50 C (-4 F to 122 F).
EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) foam is a rigid, closed-cell foam made of pre-expanded polystyrene beads that has been used in the lining and ski helmets and other sport helmets since the 1970s. Many helmets are designed with dual-density EPS foam liners to combine the benefits of high-density and low-density foams. High-density foams are better for energy transfer reduction in high-speed impacts and lower-density foam is more effective in slow-speed, low-energy impacts.
