4 Drills to Improve Your Volleys

Backhand Volley Cross Court Drill

Equipment: 10 tennis balls & some cones (or similar)

Divide the court up as shown in the diagram with your cones. Starting in the middle and just inside the service line (P), have a partner feed 10 balls (1 at a time) over to your backhand.

Hit the ball before it bounces. You score 3 pts for hitting the ball into area X, 2 pts for area Y and 1 pt for area Z. Enter your score into the space provided.

Backhand Down the Line Volley Drill

Equipment: 10 tennis balls & some cones (or similar)

Divide the court up as shown in the diagram with your cones. Starting in the middle and just inside the service line (P), have a partner feed 10 balls (1 at a time) over to your backhand.

Hit the ball before it bounces. You score 3 pts for hitting the ball into area X, 2 pts for area Y and 1 pt for area Z. Enter your score into the space provided.

You should now have a total for all of the drills out of 120 which gives you a score to aim for next time.

The drills will help highlight weak components of your volley.  If you consistently score low in a particular area, say for example the cross court forehand, spend time in that troubled area.

This is great practice drill a doubles pair can work on together to prepare for a tournament or league match.
