Why Run in a Costume?

In the past, the thought of wearing a costume might make you think of an amateur or not so serious racer. But, people who have been racing for years are completely rethinking their race-day attire. Of course a sturdy pair of shoes is a must, but the outfit doesn't have to be the latest running shorts or top. The on-course trend seems to be; who has the best race-day costume?

Kelly Lewis, co-founder of Team Sparkle, a fashionable running-skirt line, says, "It's fun to run in a costume. We say here at Team Sparkle, put the fun back into the run." And that's exactly why Kelly runs in costumes. Kelly adds, "It's just fun. People love to take pictures with me. I love to see what other people dress up as. It's also a great way for your friends and family to spot you on the course."

Tips to Run in a Costume

If you decide to take on the challenge and run in a costume, there are a few things you should keep in mind when creating your costume.

Whether you run in a 5K or marathon, Lewis says, "Start with the basics. If you want to be Peter Pan, find a green running shirt or tank. Then look for running shorts or tights that are green.  Use accessories to enhance the costume. Accessories really make the costume?your base is your typical running attire, but the accessories create the character."

If you're one who wants to dive into mud and swing on ropes, Meade says, "Don't expect to utilize your costume again. Costumes tend to get destroyed, but it's worth it. We've seen everything from full-fledged business suites, (and running in mud, those can get pretty heavy) to team costumes like super heroes. It's fun to see costumes on course, but essentially you want to be comfortable in whatever you wear."
