Hoka Rocket X3
The Hoka Rocket X3 is a race-day shoe designed for runners who crave speed and efficiency. Featuring a carbon-fiber plate and a responsive ProFlyX midsole, this shoe delivers explosive propulsion and a lightweight feel. The breathable upper ensures a snug yet comfortable fit, while the durable outsole provides reliable traction on various surfaces. Whether you're chasing a personal best or competing in a marathon, the Rocket X3 is built to help you fly past the competition.
The moment you hit stride, the Rocket X 3 comes alive. It’s sleek, confident, and built to make fast feel easy.
First Impressions:
Breathability was fantastic and the shoe was light and very responsive.
Out of the box, I initially felt these were a nice blend of snug, light, and springy. As a usual HOKA runner, these shoes felt ready to move and similar to what I would expect in the way of fit and cushioning. Overall, they felt breathable, balanced, and primed for speed.
Things We Liked:
Carbon plate makes the shoe responsive and gives back energy put into it.
My favorite thing about the Rocket X 3 is how it seems to get faster the more I do. Once I found my rhythm, the shoe just flowed ... each mile felt quicker than the last, yet effortless. It gave me that rare feeling of speed without strain, where I wasn’t pushing or forcing the pace - it just happened naturally.
Areas for Improvement:
I didn't love the split heel and the softness in the heel felt unstable walking or at low speed.
If I could change one thing, I’d want the Rocket X 3 to look a little more like the racer it was born to be. Right now, it could easily be mistaken for a regular daily trainer, even though it runs anything but ordinary. With how fast and smooth it feels, I’d love for it to stand out more in a sea of runners on race day.
Final Thoughts
The Hoka Rocket X3 delivers a featherlight road race feel, breathing easily through its single-layer warp knit upper that stays cool under speed. The carbon plate hits with noticeable propulsion, especially when picking up pace, and the color combo of grey, blue, and black gives this super-shoe a sleek, modern edge. Laces tie nicely, heel lockdown is solid, yet side panels feel somewhat shallow—there’s a sensation of sliding outward at the sides when pushing off or walking, and the split heel can catch debris and flex side-to-side when not under load. Running performance is where it shines: responsiveness is on point, stride feels effortless, and the ride rewards pace.
For long races and fast workouts, the Rocket X3 is a serious contender. Comfort is excellent in motion, but walking or standing still exposes the heel’s softness and a bit of instability. A slightly wider forefoot or more structured side-wall support might help balance speed with stability in downhill or off-ramp moments. Overall, for anyone chasing pace, especially in half-marathon or full-marathon efforts, this shoe delivers the speed, cushioning, and upper comfort many look for—just be aware it’s more race-oriented than everyday walking or casual wear.

Hoka Arahi 8
The Hoka Arahi 8 is a stability-focused running shoe that offers lightweight support without compromising on comfort. Featuring Hoka’s J-Frame technology, this shoe guides your foot naturally while reducing overpronation. The plush midsole provides a cushioned ride, while the breathable upper ensures ventilation during long runs. Perfect for runners seeking a balance of support and softness, the Arahi 8 is a dependable choice for daily training.
This shoe provides optimal stability without feeling too heavy or stiff.
First Impressions:
After 50 miles in the Hoka Arahi 8 it’s quickly become one of my favorite stability shoes. While I haven't run in this model before, it feels softer and more cushioned than past Hoka shoes. The new H-Frame stability system offers balance and comfort without feeling overly stiff. The rocker shape keeps transitions smooth and effortless, and the fit feels secure without being restrictive. It’s not the most energetic ride for faster efforts, and the upper can run a little warm on long outings, but overall the Arahi 8 delivers a smooth, stable experience that doesn’t sacrifice comfort or agility.
Things We Liked:
The best part of the Hoka Arahi 8 is the balanced stability system. It provides plenty of support without feeling too heavy or rigid.
Areas for Improvement:
The midsole is so cushioned, it can feel a bit too spongy and lack bounce when running at higher paces.
Final Thoughts
The Hoka Arahi 8 is 100% a stability shoe-light, smooth, and effortlessly supportive. Featuring the brand’s updated H-Frame stability system, the Arahi 8 delivers guidance without the rigidity often found in traditional support shoes. Its cushioning is plush yet controlled, creating a soft landing through the heel and a fluid transition to toe-off thanks to the rocker shape. The upper has been refined for a more secure midfoot fit and improved durability, while the overall geometry keeps the shoe nimble enough for everyday training or long-distance miles.
Runners enjoy the Arahi 8 for its comfort and versatility, noting that it’s stable enough for overpronators yet comfortable for neutral runners who want a little extra support. While it’s not the most responsive option for speed workouts, its smooth ride and balanced construction make it a standout daily trainer in the stability category. The Arahi 8 strikes an ideal middle ground between cushioning and control—an accessible, dependable choice for runners who value long-run comfort without sacrificing efficiency.

Hoka Mach X 3
The Hoka Mach X 3 is a versatile running shoe that combines speed and comfort for a dynamic ride. Featuring a dual-density midsole with ProFly cushioning, this shoe delivers a responsive yet cushioned feel. The lightweight upper enhances breathability, while the durable outsole ensures reliable traction. Whether you're tackling tempo runs or long-distance training, the Mach X 3 is designed to keep you moving effortlessly.
These shoes are a dream come true to wear during your races and long runs.
First Impressions:
The first thought that popped into my head was the bouncy, springy feeling in the heel of the shoe. I felt like I was walking on a cloud. The second thought that I had was the shoe had a bit of rocker feeling on each step. Each stride it felt like my foot was rocking back and forth and very responsive. The shoes felt very comfortable to fit to my foot with no need to be broken in.
The Hoka Mach x3 fit true to size with adequate space in the toebox and an overall secure, stable feeling of the foot within the shoe. After a mile or two, the shoe almost feels as if it forms to the foot, creating an additional sense of comfort. The upper material is light and breathable while still appearing strong.
The Mach x3 contains a Pebax plate between PEBA and EVA foams, and upon first trial, the plate is firmer than some springier shoe models, but this rocker construction provides a more natural bounce that just feels like a run with less effort as opposed to trying to catapult you off the ground. Overall, a solid shoe that is pleasingly versatile.
Things We Liked:
I do love the bouncy, springy feeling in the heel of the shoe. It makes me want to walk/run a little bit faster.
The Hoka Mach x3 has a comfortable, propulsive bounce that makes easy runs to tempo runs to long runs feel more effortless and fun. The responsiveness isn't exaggerated or awkward feeling - instead, it provides just enough momentum to propel you forward and ease the run.
Areas for Improvement:
The shoe felt a little on the heavy side compared to some of the other running shoes that I have. These shoes are perfect for your everyday runs. Great for walking, but more beneficial to wear running/sprinting to get the full value of the shoes. One major improvement that I have is that I get rocks, pinecones, other items stuck in the bottom/middle of the shoe while wearing them.
I would prefer the Hoka Mach x3 to be a little lighter. A slightly lighter shoe would further enhance the versatility of the shoe and extend it's range likely further to racing conditions given the comfort and responsiveness.
Final Thoughts
The Hoka Mach x3 is a versatile, dependable shoe ideal for runners looking for a trainer capable of stellar performance from tempo runs to longer runs. The cushioning forms to the foot, providing the necessary comfort for longer runs while also providing responsiveness to pick up the pace during the longer run or on a stand-alone tempo run. The PEBAX plate gives a bouncy, responsive jolt that makes the run feel easier without feeling unnatural. The upper material is breathable, allowing these shoes to be used in all conditions.
Runners hunting for a performance shoe that can span the range from daily trainer to even potentially a race day shoe should give the Hoka Mach x3 a try. It is a joy to run in on any day, any condition, for any type of workout.

Hoka Challenger 8
The Hoka Challenger 8 is a trail-to-road shoe that excels in versatility and comfort. Featuring a cushioned midsole for shock absorption and a grippy outsole for traction on various terrains, this shoe is perfect for runners who transition between trails and pavement. The breathable upper ensures a secure fit, while the lightweight design keeps you moving with ease. Whether you're exploring trails or hitting the road, the Challenger 8 is ready for any adventure.
The perfect trail shoes straight out of the box. Lightweight, bouncy, and breathable.
First Impressions:
First impression was comfort straight out of the box. The toe box was roomy, mesh upper provided enough ventilation even on warm and humid runs, they were easy to get on with the large pull loop on the back, and the lugs on the bottom provided ample grip underfoot even on slippery rocks.
Things We Liked:
The large pull loop on the back was my absolute favorite feature. Too often the loop is not big enough on a trail shoe for you to loop more than one finger into the loop. As someone who does. It regularly tie and untie shoes, this is invaluable.
Areas for Improvement:
Overall the shoes is well constructed, but the only thing that I wish the shoe had was just a little more cushion underfoot for really rocky terrain. When going on trials with lots of pointed rocks, sometimes even the large lugs weren’t enough to cut down the rocks poking in underfoot.
Final Thoughts
If you are looking for the perfect trail shoes straight out of the box, look no further than the HOKA Challenger 8. The Challenger 8 is the new and improved version of a trail classic. The breathable mesh upper, durabrasion rubber outsole, and 4mm lugs help to keep you comfortable and stable even on the most gnarly terrain. One marked improvement from version 7 to 8, is the change in heel drop from 5 mm to 8mm. The benefit for heel strikers is noticeable with less impact on the Achilles and lower leg vs that previous iteration. The improvement of the heel loop from a smaller vertical loop on version 7 to a larger horizontal loop on version 8 allows runners the ability to get on shoes with more than one finger or both hands. If you have ever struggled with ease of putting on your shoes, this is an invaluable improvement.
Overall if you are looking for a shoes that can do it all, keep you comfortable, transition from every day use to race day, and not break the bank, the HOKA Challenger 8 may be the ideal shoe for you.

- Breathability: The upper materials were tested for airflow to determine how well they managed heat and moisture during a run.
- Flexibility: We analyzed the shoe's flexibility in the forefoot and its overall ability to move naturally with the runner's stride.
