Active City Spotlight: Triathlete's Guide to New York City

Races to Remember

The New York City Triathlon each August is a bucket-list race. Much like its marathon counterpart, it is a high-demand event that requires a lottery to fairly pass out entries.

The Olympic-distance race has a 1,500-meter swim in the Hudson River, a 40K bike ride on the West Side highway and a 10K run through Central Park.

Other well-known races include:

  • The Brooklyn Triathlon in November may be chilly (you never know that time of year) but has an intriguing course—an ocean swim off Coney Island, biking through Brooklyn and running on the Coney Island boardwalk.
  • The HarryMan Triathlon in May takes place at Harriman State Park, about 30 miles north of the city.
  • The closest Ironman race is Ironman Lake Placid, about 5 hours north in upstate New York.

Stores to Check Out

Swim Bike Run NYC is a multi-sport store at 203 W. 58th Street in Manhattan, just a block from Central Park. The store offers gear, apparel and bikes as well as services like bike fitting, wetsuit fitting, endless pool rental, mechanical services and more.

Swim Bike Run NYC also offers swimming instruction and running instruction using in-store coaches.

Other triathlon stores include:

  • JackRabbit Sports doesn't have bikes but they do a great job catering to triathletes in terms of gear and clothing. They have four locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

One Last Tip

For open water swimmers, NYC Swim puts on many events throughout the year in the city's waterways. That includes the Brooklyn Bridge Swim across the East River, the Statue of Liberty Swim around Liberty Island, and the Great Hudson River Swim.
