What My Dog Taught Me About Running

Written by
My dog Buzz and I have been running partners for the last six years. He's a good friend, a great listener and the most enthusiastic runner I know. He explores the world on four feet with his nose to the ground and his tail in the air. We've covered hundreds of miles together and, along the way, he's taught me some very important lessons.

Not every run is perfect. Buzz has his share of naughty moments during our runs. But even then, he reminds me that we all run for our own reasons and at our own pace. If nothing else, enjoy the miles. Fast, slow, easy or hard—cherish them all.
Running is Play

If running feels like work, you're doing it wrong. It's okay to stop and sit. Even if you're only a half mile from home.
Chase Something

Sometimes you just have to feel the wind in your face and let yourself go. Chase your dreams, a new personal record or the squirrel that dares to cross your path.
Be Social
1 of 10
Say hello to the people you see along the way. Wave, smile and be sure everybody knows you're there. We can all use more friends.
Trust Your Instincts

Sometimes a friendly hello isn't the right course of action. Trust your instincts. For runners, this can mean resting an injury or not taking a shady-looking path. For Buzz, this means avoiding skateboards, balloons and hair dryers.
Eat Well

Fuel your body by eating healthy foods, and keep your energy up by eating throughout the day. And never pass up the chance to enjoy the occasional treat.
Nap More

Focus on recovery. Nap in the sunshine. You've earned it.
Explore

Find new routes and break new trails. The dirtier you get, the more fun you'll have.
Be Positive
1 of 10
Wag your tail and jump at the chance to go for a run.
Don't Hesitate

Life is fleeting. Live fully and without hesitation.
